History and General InformationScranton Today grew out of Scranton Tomorrow’s Forging the Future visioning process. In various meetings, particularly discussions of the Efficient Government and Taxes and Community Betterment Committees, concerns were expressed about improving residents’ understanding of, and participation in, local government. In order to improve the understanding of the electorate and to bring many local civic discussions and community events into the living rooms of television viewers, Scranton Tomorrow volunteers investigated the possibility of initiating a cable TV channel devoted to public access, education and government decision-making. Such a venture would put Scranton on par with similar communities across the country. In its contract with Verto Communications (now Comcast), the city negotiated access to such a channel. With the cooperation of the City of Scranton and Verto Communications, Scranton Today became operational in early 1998. The geographic heart of Scranton Today's cablecast facilities is located in the Lackawanna County Children’s Library. The facility houses both the equipment and personnel required for the operation of the PEG (Public, Education, & Government) channel. The basement is outfitted with video recording equipment and serves as the master control room and dubbing studio. Scranton Today also maintains robotic cameras, an audio system, and a control area in Scranton City Council Chambers in City Hall. This enables us to cablecast municipal meetings. We also have one remote camera for location shoots including guest lecturers and performances. In 2006 Scranton Today became an independent 501(c) organization. Funding is provided by the City of Scranton, Lackawanna County, the Scranton School District, and donations from organizations and private individuals. We currently have two paid staff members. Scranton Today is administered by an all-volunteer Board of Directors.
